How Often Should You Really Wash Your Hair?
One of the most common hair care questions is: How often should I wash my hair? The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all—it depends on your hair type, lifestyle, and personal preference. Washing too frequently can strip natural oils, while washing too little can lead to build-up. At Mary G Hair, a multi-award-winning hairdresser in Wolverhampton, I help clients find the perfect hair-washing routine to maintain healthy, beautiful hair.
Are You Washing Your Hair Properly?
Washing your hair is something we do our whole lives, but are we doing it correctly? Award-winning hairdresser Mary Geoghegan breaks down the fundamentals of proper hair washing, depending on your hair type.
Do You Need to Shampoo Once or Twice?
If you have straight or wavy hair and wash daily or every other day, one shampoo cycle is usually enough. However, if you wait three days or more, a double shampoo is necessary. The first wash removes excess oil, product build-up, and environmental dirt, while the second shampoo deeply cleanses the scalp, removing dead skin. Be thorough when scrubbing—missing areas can cause irritation, itchiness, and flaking.
When conditioning, focus on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. These areas are older, more fragile, and need extra hydration. Your roots, however, are newer and naturally produce oil, so applying conditioner too close to the scalp can make your hair look greasy. If you have long hair, detangle it while your conditioner is on using a Tangle Teezer or wide-tooth comb—this makes post-wash styling much easier.
For curly, coiled, or afro-textured hair, washing less frequently is best. Natural oils have a harder time travelling down textured strands, meaning moisture retention is key. A once-a-week wash with a double shampoo ensures a thorough cleanse without drying out your hair. Unlike straight hair types, curly and coiled hair benefits from conditioner applied from root to tip. The entire hair shaft needs hydration to prevent frizz. Working in sections helps ensure even distribution of conditioner and styling products, keeping curls nourished and defined.
How Hair Type Affects Washing Frequency
Fine or oily hair tends to get greasy quickly, so washing every one to two days helps maintain freshness. Medium to thick hair can usually go two to three days between washes, while curly and coarse hair benefits from even less frequent washing—every three to five days. If your hair is coloured, particularly blonde or balayage, over-washing can cause fading and dryness. Washing two to three times a week with a colour-safe, hydrating shampoo helps maintain vibrancy and moisture.
Lifestyle Factors That Affect Washing Frequency
Your lifestyle also plays a role in how often you should wash your hair. If you work out regularly, sweating may require rinsing or co-washing between shampoos. Climate matters too—humidity often leads to more frequent washing, while cold, dry air might necessitate fewer washes. If you use a lot of styling products, build-up can accumulate, meaning more regular cleansing is needed.
Are You Washing Too Often or Not Enough?
Washing too often can lead to dry, brittle hair, increased frizz, and even excess oil production as your scalp compensates for lost moisture. On the other hand, if your hair feels limp, greasy, or your scalp is itchy and flaky, you may not be washing enough. Finding the right balance is key to maintaining healthy, beautiful hair.
