What Your Hairbrush Says About You — And What You Should Really Be Using

At Mary G Hair in Tettenhall, I often see clients doing everything right with their shampoo, conditioner, and styling—but using the wrong brush for their hair type. The truth? The right brush can transform how your hair looks and feels.

Here’s a guide to what your current brush may be doing (or not doing!) for your hair—and which one you should be reaching for.

Paddle Brush – Great for Straight & Long Hair

What it says: You love sleek, low-maintenance styling. Best for: Straight, wavy, or long hair that needs detangling and smoothness. Avoid: Using this on curly hair—it flattens volume and can break up curl patterns.

Denman or Styling Brush – Ideal for Curly Hair Definition

What it says: You’ve learned how to enhance your natural curl pattern. Best for: Curl training, especially for type 2C to 4A curls. Top tip: Use on wet hair with conditioner or curl cream to define without frizz.

Wide-Tooth Comb – A Curly Girl Essential

What it says: You value your texture and want to treat it with care. Best for: Curly, afro, or thick hair to gently detangle without breakage. When to use: In the shower with conditioner for slip and easy detangling.

Boar Bristle Brush – For Smoothing & Shine

What it says: You’re all about that polished finish. Best for: Medium to fine hair to distribute natural oils from root to tip. Bonus: Helps reduce frizz and adds natural shine. Not great for thick or coarse hair.

Round Brush – Perfect for Blow-Drying

What it says: You like salon results at home. Best for: Creating volume, movement, and bouncy blow-dries. Tip: Use a ceramic core round brush for quicker drying and longer-lasting shape.

Afro Pick – For Volume & Lift

What it says: You embrace big, bold hair. Best for: Afro and coily textures to add lift and shape without disturbing curls. Use on: Dry hair to fluff and shape between wash days.

Bonus Tip* Don’t Overlook Damaged Bristles

Even the right brush can cause damage if it’s past its best. Look out for bent, broken, or rough bristles—especially on plastic or metal brushes—as these can snag, tear, or split the hair shaft. Over time, this leads to unnecessary breakage and frizz. If your brush is missing bristles, feels scratchy on the scalp, or tugs more than it should, it’s time for a replacement. A smooth, well-maintained brush glides through your hair and supports healthy styling.
